Frankie Knuckles
Real Name: Frank Warren Knuckles, Jr.
Profile: Frankie Knuckles was born in the South Bronx of New York City on the 18th January 1955. While studying textile design at FIT in Manhattan, Knuckles began working as a DJ, playing soul, disco and R&B at The Continental Baths with fellow DJ Larry Levan. When he became better known, he DJed at the club Better Days. When the Warehouse club opened in Chicago in 1977, he was invited to play on a regular basis. He continued DJing there until 1982, when he started his own club, The Power Plant.. It was at this point that the sobriquet ‘House Music’ was applied to the sounds played at the Warehouse by Frankie. Initially it was a catch-all term to describe the wide range of music being played at the Warehouse, it soon became the word used to define the raw, drum machine based edits and tracks that Frankie was playing in the early 80s. Incidentally Frankie bought his first drum machine from a young Derrick May who regularly made the trip from Detroit to see Frankie at the Warehouse and fellow pioneer Ron Hardy at the Music Box.
Knuckles also had a musical partnership with Jamie Principle, and helped put ‘Your Love’ and ‘Baby wants to ride’ out on vinyl after having been regulars on his reel-to-reel player at the Warehouse for a year.It is widely accepted that his style of DJing and his selection and the appeal of the Warehouse gave house music its name, although in the beginning, the word ‘house’ was used only in Chicago to denote something which was cool, hip, fresh or bad. Frankie Knuckles had been long time friends with Larry Levan, they had had their musical upbringing together from going to clubs like Loft and the Gallery.

Virgin Records America, Inc.
Profile: Virgin began as a London record shop, specializing in krautrock imports, becoming Virgin Records, a small, independent label begun in 1972 by Richard Branson & Nik Powell. Virgin expanded to the US in 1986 after failed attempts to license its bands to U.S. labels, gaining distribution by Atlantic Records div. of WEA (Warner-Elektra-Atlantic). By 1991, Virgin was the world’s largest independent label when sold for a reported $1 billion to EMI, now the world’s third-largest music company. Branson sold out to fund Virgin Atlantic Airways. Having some exclusive artists, Virgin Records America shares some artists with its parent label and other foreign divisions. EMI’s Virgin launched record companies RealWorld, Innocent, Point Blank and Hut, and absorbed sister label Charisma Records. Branson took a 5-year break from the music industry and founded V2 Records in 1997; he was prevented from starting another record company sooner by a 5-year, non-competition clause in his sale of Virgin agreement.
